Teachers, doctors and other employees working in the budget-financed sectors of Russia's economy shouldn't count on previously promised salary increases at least until the end of this year, Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov told reporters on Tuesday.

Kasyanov spoke at a press conference that followed up on a government meeting held earlier in the day.

At the meeting, the Cabinet reviewed the results of its work over the past 12 months and endorsed the plan of Russia's social-economic development by 2005.

"The December (2001) raise was all the country can afford," Kasyanov said, answering a question related to earlier government plans to keep raising salaries in state-run businesses in 2002 as well.
